Robson Square Set To Celebrate Olympic Spirit

Vancouver A festive, activity-filled day planned for Feb. 12 will mark the first anniversary of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, announced Stephanie Cadieux, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development.

Robson Square where so many people shared B.C.s exciting Olympic spirit in Vancouver one year ago will once again be a focal point for a community celebration, Cadieux said. The 2010 Games gave British Columbians many joyful, memorable moments as our province starred on the world stage. Lets rekindle our Olympic pride on a great day featuring free activities for families and some fine entertainment by outstanding B.C. talent.

The 2010 Games created an inspiring legacy for British Columbians, said Mary McNeil, Minister of Citizens Services. The people of this province deserve such sincere thanks for the way they embraced the Games with enthusiasm and pride. Lets all celebrate the first Olympic anniversary.

Free performances throughout the day and evening will feature interactive community arts, established and emerging artists as well as vibrant performances celebrating our diverse local cultures.

Public skating from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

A chance to win in a random draw for four VIP tickets to the Vancouver Canucks-Calgary Flames Olympic Memories game on Feb. 12 at Rogers Arena. Contest tickets will be available between 9 and 11 a.m. at Robson Square. Ticket winners must be on site at Robson Square when the random draw takes place at approximately 11:30 a.m.

At 4 p.m., Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games torchbearers, VANOC volunteers and staff will join the public for the first anniversary of the official lighting of the Olympic Cauldron at Jack Poole Plaza.

Funding for the Olympic commemorative celebrations as well as more than 90 B.C. Spirit Festivals and events to be held provincewide comes from the 2010 Sport and Arts Legacy, established by the Province to help celebrate the pride and spirit shown by British Columbians during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad.
